Impact Stories
Moinia Islamia High School, established in 1910 has been catering to the education needs of the area for over 110 years. An institution that continuously focuses on adopting the new, has provided a new set of sanitation facility using the technology developed by DRDO and the system designed by Nirgandh.
The installation helps ensure that the students have access to clean, safe and sustainable sanitation. The technology ensures that there is no contamination of soil and ground water.
Progressive thought process at the leadership level helps create and sustain change. Tain, a village in Haryana is an example. The village is a ‘Smartpur’ village, a digital village ecosystem. The digital ecosystem has a Wifi hub, a medical clinic and they have provided an ambulance for medical emergencies. The ecosystem that has bee set up at the panchayat ghar, also has an assistance point for governance, a teaching centre to help students with their academics and the team also assists with finance information and assistance.
The focus for ‘Team Tain” is to continue being a game changer. And in this endeavour they have also moved to the new sanitation technology. They have set up a community toilet at the ‘Smartpur’ using the bio-digester technology developed by DRDO . The installation and display of the technology has also encouraged individuals in the village to move to this technology.
Seen many movies where women in clusters are walking a distance, at odd hours, just to go to the toilet. This ‘reel life’ is ‘real life’ for a lot of women across the world. This is due to lack of access to a safe sanitation facility.
Realizing this desperate need, a young and open minded Sarpanch decided to make a change. A ‘Nirgandh’ facility was set up in the village to make life easier for the women. A 4 door facility, with two of these toilets reserved for women. It has been placed at a location where there is running water and electricity. More and more women are encouraged to use the facility and not go into the wilderness. Safety was the most important priority and this installation helped achieve it.
Change is a mindset and that is what needed to be altered!
A school catering to 200+ children was seeing an increased drop-out rate amongst girl students. After talking to them and analyzing the situation it was not difficult to identify the problem – there was no toilet complex for girls. A real, in the face issue encountered by thousands of girls.
A ‘Nirgandh’ facility was set up in the school compound. Now, more than 100 girls have access to a safe and hygienic facility and they no longer need to worry about a basic right that each individual deserves. We have seen a considerable reduction in the drop-out rates and our efforts certainly seem worthwhile.
Safe sanitation is not a privilege it is the right of every individual. We would like to make that happen!
Nirgandh has installed its sanitation system at 2 schools in the Dehradun district (Dharampur and Banjarawala). Both these schools are for under privileged students (boys & girls). The schools are managed by an NGO called Asara. We are proud to say that these installations impact 350+ students on an ongoing basis. The children today do not have to worry about access to safe sanitation. The students are also aware of how water is being conserved, reused and recycled. The output water from the bio-digester is treated through a reed bed to make it irrigation friendly. The students from the schools have worked tirelessly to utilize this treated water for increasing greenery around their school. The smiles say it all! Sincere efforts will always reap results.
